Radomił "Poziom" Gomółka — Light, Shadow, and the Architecture of the Everyday

Radomił "Poziom" Gomółka is a Polish photographer and skateboarder from Zakopane, a mountain town in the south of the country. For the past three years he has lived in Kraków. There, after years of searching, he found his path as a photographer, shaped by the city's architecture and its skateboarding community.

Skateboarders read a city differently from everyone else, and Radomił photographs it that way. He works mainly with light and shadow, and he treats them as the real structure of a frame. In one image, a skater in a red flannel pushes along a pale concrete wall, caught inside a sharp wedge of sunlight while his shadow stretches out ahead of him. In another, a rider pops an ollie under an overpass, his body almost lost in darkness while the shadow of his board lands cleanly in a patch of light on the pavement below. Inside a concrete pipe, two skaters carve opposite walls, and the curve of the tunnel turns the scene into a spiral.

What connects these images is a focus on story. Radomił sets out to build a narrative from situations that seem ordinary: a push down a sidewalk, a trick under a bridge, an afternoon in a drainage pipe. He waits for the moment when light, architecture, and movement line up, and a familiar place becomes something new.

We asked Radomił Gomółka questions that could only be answered with images…

Black and white frame beneath a covered walkway: a skater pops an ollie almost lost in darkness while the shadow of rider and board lands in a bright patch of pavement below.

Beneath a steel bridge, a skater riding down a flight of steps appears reflected in a mirrored panel set into a sunlit concrete wall, with graffiti and autumn trees beyond.

High angle black and white shot of a lone figure walking through a narrow triangular wedge of light, with the X of a fence shadow falling across the paving.

Black and white overhead view of a skateboarder and his long cast shadow on a tapering blade of light across tiled ground, surrounded by darkness.

An abandoned graffiti-covered skate bowl reclaimed by woodland, dappled green light falling through the leaves as a skater rides the lip.

A skater mid-ollie, small against a vast grid of grey concrete panels carrying an oversized wall clock.

Black and white self-portrait distorted through a curved reflective surface: the photographer in a cap, one eye to the viewfinder of a Canon camera.

Geometric concrete slabs of a flyover frame a gap of cloudy sky and a billboard, with a small skateboarder crossing a wedge of light far below.

Black and white underpass interior of massive columns and beams, a single distant figure silhouetted in a shaft of daylight.
